Mar%C3%ADa Santos Gorrostieta Salazar

Mara Santos Gorrostieta Salazar was a Mexican physician and politician of the Party of the Democratic Revolution . From 2008 to 2011, she served as mayor of Tiquicheo, a small town in the Mexican state of Michoacn. In spite of three failed assassination attempts during her tenure as mayor, Gorrostieta Salazar continued to be outspoken in the fight against organized crime. In a fourth attack, Gorrostieta Salazar was kidnapped and assassinated by suspected drug traffickers onNovember 2012. Michoacn is home to several violent drug trafficking organizations such as La Familia Michoacana and the Knights Templar Cartel.

Gorrostieta Salazar was born in 1976 in Tiquicheo, a small town in the state of Michoacn, Mexico. She attended the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicols de Hidalgo in Morelia and earned a PhD in medicine.
